March 08, 2010

In their recent investigation of the relationship between compliance with antidepressant therapy and employer costs, Principal Howard Birnbaum, Senior Analyst Evan Kantor, Managing Principals Pierre Cremieux and Paul Greenberg, and co-author Brian Seal found that “increased compliance with antidepressants is significantly associated with reduced absenteeism costs.” The study, “Assessing the Relationship Between Compliance with Antidepressant Therapy and Employer Costs Among Employees in the United States” (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Vol. 52, No. 2, February 2010), uses workplace survey data linked to the health care claims of two employers to assess the effects of antidepressant treatment compliance on health care and workplace costs.
